    Introductory Note:

“In the 1960s, love songs turned to songs of protest and youth the world over its voice in poetry that was grievous in its candour. These revisions of the English nursery rhymes that were a part of my childhood were a response to that troubled decade. Just out of childhood when I wrote them, I was perhaps attempting to bring a personal history up to date. That being the case, these rhymes clearly are dated; yet I venture to suggest that they resemble the spirit if in little else the mode of creation, and transmission, of their originals.”
