On 16 May 2018, after spending two stints in prison totalling eight years behind bars, Anwar Ibrahim was released and received a full pardon from the King from all charges of corruption and sodomy.
For Mark Trowell QC, who represented the interests of the Inter-Parliamentary Union at the criminal trials of Anwar Ibrahim, the release was “as historic as the release of Nelson Mandela in South Africa.” It was an outcome he couldn’t have imagined possible after the way the judicial system dealt with Anwar over two decades during which he was twice convicted and jailed on trumped-up charges.
