  • About the Authors
  • This remarkable collaboration between a mathematical physicist and a science philosopher concerns foundational and conceptual issues in seismology. Their aim is to present mathematical, physical and philosophical topics in a clear and concise manner. They provide an extensive philosophical discussion of the methods of science and show how seismology fits in. They explain with care and precision the basic structure of seismology, which is built on classical continuum mechanics. Not only do they explain how various models work in seismology, they also include an extensive discussion of the nature of models and idealizations.

  • James Robert Brown is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto. His interests include a range of topics in the philosophy of science and mathematics: thought experiments, foundational issues in mathematics and physics, visual reasoning, and issues involving science and society, such as the detrimental role of commercialization in medical research.

Michael A Slawinski is a Professor of Seismology at Memorial University in St. John's and the director of The Geomechanics Project, a theoretical research group — founded in 1998 at the University of Calgary — whose focus is on extending seismological theory within the realm of continuum mechanics and the language of mathematics.
