About the Authors

Since the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) was first established in 1981, it has played a valuable role in keeping Singapore safe. Yet what exactly is crime prevention? Indeed, as the authors Susan Sim and Majeed Khader ask in the book, ‘What is that Ostrich doing on a Crime Prevention Poster?’

This fascinating and eminently readable study of the art and science of crime prevention interrogates these questions, and more. Through focused analyses of the anatomy of some of the NCPC’s most notable campaigns, we learn what the NCPC does, why it does it, and the lessons it has learned along the way.
Dr Majeed Khader is the Director of the Home Team Behavioural Sciences Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Singapore. Dr Majeed is also the Chief Psychologist of the MHA. A trained hostage negotiator, his previous operational duties include being the Deputy Commander of the Crisis Negotiation Unit and a trainer with the negotiation unit. He teaches criminal psychology as an Assistant Professor (Adjunct) at the School of Social Sciences at Nanyang Technology University (NTU), Singapore. For the past 26 years, Majeed has overseen the development of psychological services in the areas of stress, resilience, employee selection, deception psychology, leadership, crisis negotiations, crime profiling, and crisis psychology.

Susan Sim is Vice President for Asia at The Soufan Group. Based in Singapore, she consults with clients and conducts overseas training programs, research, and special projects related to counterterrorism, geopolitics, and national security.
