Ter Cheah lost her right leg to synovial sarcoma at age six and her first book, ONE is loosely based on her recollections. She is now 42, married, with two children.

Ter Cheah was a Humanities scholar at pre-university, later studied law at NUS and also obtained her professional accountancy qualification while working full-time in the law division of a government body. She has practised as a tax lawyer and also worked on tax advisory matters in one of the Big Four accounting firms.

She now works part-time (still in the area of tax), and spends a lot of time at playgrounds, enjoying watching her children on the monkey bars, and also admiring the birds that hang off mango trees.
