September School Holiday Activity Ideas
We love the school holidays. They’re a glorious break from the norm for the kids and a chance for the whole family to do something different together. From getting outside to cooking up a storm in the kitchen, there are plenty of ways to keep the kids entertained. So if you’re looking for inspiration on what to do with your kids this September break (and beyond), we’ve got you covered.
Attend an exhibition.
Travel back in time at the Botanical Illustrations by Wai Wai Hove from the Garden of Miss Joaquim Collection exhibition, and take a look at the 44 botanical illustrations of fruits, flowers, plants, spices and vegetables commonly grown by horticulturists in the 19th century. These plants are believed to be the likely species that Agnes Joaquim grew and garnered awards for in the annual Flower Shows; these accolades were documented in the local newspapers.
Date: 17 Aug-17 Sept
Time: 9am-9pm
Venue: Singapore Botanic Gardens, People’s Gallery - (i) Botany Centre (Tanglin Gate), (ii) Nassim Gate Visitor Centre and (iii) Botanic Gardens MRT Exit A (Bukit Timah Gate)
Cook together.
We can learn a lot about one another through the food that we eat—what more the food that we cook. Flip through any of the easy recipes in our cookbooks and whip up something together as a family. For starters, we recommend this Cornflake Cookies recipe.
Read a book.
We can't be a bookstore without saying that you need to read a book. Books are one of the things that build the foundation of a child's character, help to stimulate their curiosity and shape their view of the world.
For a light-hearted good time, check out the Percy & Pam series, which follows the polar bear-and-girl duo on their little adventures around Singapore. Follow Sherlock Sam in his exciting investigations on our little island and beyond. Bond with the younger ones over the Heritage Picture Books and the conversations between Jack and his mama in the Jack Is Curious series. Honestly, you'll be spoilt for choice.
Print out free stay-home activities for kids.
If you haven't heard, we've recently launched Epigram Treehouse, a free educational online resource for kids, filled with videos and all sorts of activities, like word searches and colouring pages, that are created in conjunction with our children’s books. Everything is updated regularly, so kids don’t get bored doing the same things over and over again.
All of the activity sheets are downloadable, so you can print them out at home. Simply download what you think the little ones will like, let them follow the instructions and have fun!
