When she inadvertently unlocks the gateway to a new world, she realises she must escape the government’s radar. She ventures into the lowest rung of society, the Voids, and meets with the eccentric Uncle Kirk and the resourceful Father Lang. While on the run, she learns why her father disappeared seven years ago and why the new world exists in the first place.
Probing and thrilling, this novel explores worlds within worlds and reinvents the creation myth.

“Judith Huang’s Sophia and the Utopia Machine is a bold and fantastical work that posits a new cosmology within which a science-fiction vision of Singapore is rendered in dystopian terms, even as its characters strive ironically for an idealised future. It’s a work that would sit perfectly on any Young Adult speculative fiction shelf with its fast-paced and childlike sense of adventure.”
—Cyril Wong, Judge, Epigram Books Fiction Prize 2017"Readers who enjoy YA with plenty of narrative ambition and a brisk plot will find much to like in Sofia and the Utopia Machine. The narrative stakes are clearly articulated with good guys and villains engaged in a fierce conflict over the shape of a whole society."
—Diane Josefowicz, Singapore Unbound -
