Look inside the book
What makes someone want to purposely put themselves at the receiving end of a punch? What does it mean to willingly choose a career in combat sports - especially in Singapore, a nation where pragmatism is so highly prized? In this book, we answer these questions. We speak to local professional fighters like Tiffany “No Chill” Teo and Syafiq “The Slasher” Abdul Samad who have made fighting their career. We ask promoters and gym owners like Arvind “The Juggernaut” Lalwani why he chooses to keep the lifeblood of the Singaporean scene flowing through the running of gyms and the staging of tournaments. We listen to the stories of instructors like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Alexsandro “Leke” Machado and Capoeira Master Silvano “Tucum” Santos who have travelled from places far and wide to set up home and gym on our sunny island.
This is Singapore’s fight scene.
Andrea Yew is the author and founder of this passion project. She graduated from the University of Edinburgh and is currently based in Singapore. Her creative work is featured in various anthologies such as Twin Cities, Asingbol, Anima Methodi and SingPoWriMo 2018. She launched her debut collection, In These Curved Spaces in 2019 and is also the co-editor of Crazy Little Pyromaniacs. She is also a contributor to the anthology Making Kin. Her hobbies include strangling people on the mats when she is not buried under a pile of marking.
Alvin Ang, co-author, was the first person that Andrea approached with this crazy idea of a book. He is a writer, mixed-martial artist, and entrepreneur based out of Singapore. He’s best known for his stint on the hit reality TV show The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition, and is currently working on his novel, National Service: Confessions of a Chao Keng Soldier. Alvin is also the brain behind one of Singapore’s biggest martial arts competitions, the Singapore Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Open. He has also helped to organize Lion City Championship. Alvin and Andrea were also gym mates where Alvin valiantly tried to teach Andrea the basics of Brazilian jiujitsu and how not to get her ass whooped.
